Instagram – Teacher Account

Tool Name
Instagram – Teacher Account

Tool Description

Instagram is an online mobile photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and videos, and share them on a variety of social networking platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Flickr. A distinctive feature is that it confines photos to a square shape, similar to Kodak Instamatic and Polaroid images, in contrast to the 4:3 aspect ratio typically used by mobile device cameras. Users can also apply digital filters to their images. The maximum duration for Instagram videos is 15 seconds.

Tool status = Accepted with Conditions, Teacher Accounts ONLY

Notes =

Instagram can be used if it is a teacher initiated account and teacher controlled. Students would not be permitted access to the account but a teacher can post the images (student work for example) for them. Students under 13 are not permitted to open accounts based on Instagram’s privacy policy and our own FOIP policies and therefore cannot use the app. Administrators in the school would need to know the password and account name as per the responsible use of social media policy.

The class account should be marked private because by default anyone can view the images that are posted. Parents would then need to create an account so they can “follow” the class account and teachers would have to approve any “follow requests”.

Teachers should not be posting images of students or names in social media but would need to inform parents as they need to set up accounts to follow the class.
